Exploring the Role of Analogico-Deductive Reasoning in the Balance-Beam Task

چکیده
Piaget’s classic experiments enabled, among many other things, identification of the types of reasoning children use in different developmental stages. His work identified both hypothetico-deductive and analogical reasoning as strong indicators of normal development. Although examples of each can be seen early on, consistent application and control of these types of reasoning emerges somewhere between Stages III and IV. Given their importance in the developmental process, it can only help the study of cognitive development to have a deeper understanding of how these types of reasoning are carried out. We focus in this paper on ways in which they interact (we call this ADR, for analogico-deductive reasoning); specifically on the interaction of generation, development, and testing of hypotheses. We present a model and show how it can explain the reasoning processes of a Stage-III subject working on Inhelder and Piaget’s (1958) seminal balance-beam task. Analogy and Analogico-Deductive

Exploring the Role of Cognitive and Procedural Task Complexity in EFL Learners' Attention to L2 System and Form-focused Self-repairs
In L2 development, the cognitive complexity of tasks plays a crucial role in task performance and language features produced. However, there have only been few studies addressing the impact of task complexity on EFL learners' attention to L2 system and form-focused self-repairs (FFS).This study explores the role of increasing cognitive task complexity in EFL learners' form-focused attention (FF...

متن کاملInteraction of reasoning ability and training intervention in reaction to training evaluation and post training effectiveness.
It has been shown that learners' abilities interact with the type of training intervention and effect on training and its outcomes. For this reason, the current research investigated the interaction of reasoning ability with two training methods, namely deductive and empirical methods, in effect on reaction to training evaluation and post training effectiveness. This research was an applied an...

متن کاملThe Impact of Deductive, Inductive, and L1-Based Consciousness-Raising Tasks on EFL Learners' Acquisition of the Request Speech Act
The necessity and importance of teaching pragmatics has come to light by many researchers (e.g. Rose & Kasper, 2001). Due to the consensus over the need to teach pragmatic competence, the main issue now centers on the question of how we should teach this competence in the most effective way. Consistent with this line of research, the present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of deduc...
